Default Boogie Wonderland

I have been to nightclubs of the lowest and thus, best, kind, featuring the usual triumvirate of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Thus I was unsure of how I ended up at Boogie Wonderland (cover charge $10), a downtown Auckland club specialising in disco. I had to revaluate my ideas of what constituted depraved nightclub behaviour when a remixed version of Barry Manilow’s ‘Copacabana’ hit the turntable.

I knew I had sunk to my deepest depths, after ordering from their cocktail list. The Worst Ever Cosmopolitan I Have Ever Had Anywhere was produced. The Worst. Ever. The alcoholic content seemed to be limited to a dismissive wave in the general direction of the requisite vodka and Cointreau. The bartender then showily lit a scummy piece of orange rind aflame and set it adrift in the watery $14 beverage. Quizzing revealed this was to “create a strong orange flavour”. Funny. That’s what I thought the Cointreau was for.

Tired feet and a spinning head begged a seat, and a row of inviting booths beckoned. Unfortunately, the entrance-fee to this reserved section was a promise to buy six or more cocktails (twelve or more for the large booths). I considered the prospect of six more Thoroughly Rotten Cosmopolitans, and quickly declined.

A conga-line started to assemble.
I left.

Gotta love your vileness

Well written. Thanks.

Kinda interesting, your form of deriding of an establishment is a good advertisement for them. Could well imagine it encourages people to go and see for themselves.

Certainly gets me clicking on your sig website to have a look at your blog comments.

I look forward to your next installment and the next encouragement to read your blog.

Smile Go Boogie!

Just felt I should put in my experience seeing as the only other experience here wouldn't have made me go to the bar!

My group had a booth booked (we just called up first) turned up and had a lovely girl look after us! She brought us drinks all night and although i did not drink one cosmo our table had a mixture of fantastic jap Slippers and crazy fuffly ducks! The Dj's were great and we partied away!

If you book in advance your treated like a VIP you don't cue you just rock up to the door and have your own seat which is great at 11pm when everyone is looking for a seat! It did cost extra (a cocktail each - 8 in our group) but it was worth it just to have our own special area to chill out in and have our drinks brought to us! We avoided door charge by being their before 9pm and so it only cost us $14 dollars each for the cocktail (we did however spend more on drinks by our own choice!)

Great night out!!

Thumbs down

Ive seen better bars in the rumpus rooms of south auckland houses. Absolute dive. The drinks are absolute crap, the food is skanky, service is useless and the place is an icon drop kick.

Default Such a review demanded some conversation....

I was not keen for the above review to remain. Not what I would call balanced. So I had a few private messages with kiwiwinefanclub....

All the best with your own website.

For instance, your latest Cin Cin post - mention of the tatty drinks list and wine options not being available, yet some positive comments in there. Thats a good balance.

I guess I could have said if you like disco you could danced instead of drink or eat. But on the food and drink front its as low as they go. The bar is filthy, disorganised and not professional. It is dark, manky and damp. The selection of drinks is a joke only beaten by the vile food menu. Then the wait to get your deep fried shite- zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I know Helen rules over us all with her PC crowd, but review sites that only allow scores of 5 or 6 out of 10 are not worth the 'paper' they are written on. It isnt NZCA here, not everyone gets a warm fuzzy certificate of attendance. This is the real world! People should be able to say it how it is. Personally when I read the reviews and I am especially interested in the bad ones if reoccurring. Spent 6 years on the other side of the hospitality fence, and I can tell you some places havent got a clue.
