On the 16th Feb 2006 we had an experience at Euro that still makes me cringe just thinking about it. We arrived at the restaurant at 8:15pm and after spending the day moving house we were all showered up and dressed smart but not as formally as a foreign couple who entered the restaurant shortly after us. I asked if a table for two was available and the maitre ‘d Mr. Vincent Ray politely advised us that there would be a 1/2hour wait, we were happy with this, and Mr. Ray proceeded to give us a booking card. We simply moved to the waiting area and had our first and only drink of the day. We noticed after 15 minutes that the couple who requested a table after us were seated and reviewing the menu. Unperturbed we assumed our table would be ready shortly. We waited a further 10 minutes and then decided to pay for our drinks and leave. Mr. Ray passed us while we were settling our account and mentioned that a table would be ready soon. I said that we were disappointed that we would be seated after another couple who arrived directly after us, and that we were leaving. Mr. Ray said “They are my regular customers, what else am I supposed to do?” I said to him “That’s your call, but we’re leaving” and proceeded to enter my eftpos PIN. On the way out of the restaurant I just could not resist backtracking and quietly asking the other couple “Excuse me, but do you dine here regularly?” The response was “No, this is our first time here.” With the couple thinking they knew me from somewhere I said “Thanks” with polite eye contact and a raised palm. I then walked inside the restaurant, found Mr. Ray and said to him, “Just spoke to your regular customers, it’s their first time here.” What happened next was the whole reason for this review. My fiancé and I proceeded to walk out of the restaurant. Mr. Ray obviously took considerable offence at my words and as we were walking away from him he advanced quickly shouting, “Get out of my restaurant!” I turned to see why he was shouting and he said, “Stop harassing my customers! Get out of my restaurant!” We stopped on the step of the out door area and asked him “What are you on about?” he said “Get out of my restaurant and attempted to push my fiancé down the step” My fiancé said “Get your hands off me” and slapped his arms away. We moved backward and walked away. Mr. Ray shouted “Get out of here this is Princess Warf.” I don’t know what that meant but Mr. Ray was very angry at the time. All in all we were very embarrassed and shaken. Everybody on the terrace that evening would have thought that my fiancé and I had committed some form of crime. Whereas the reality was that Mr. Vincent Ray was completely out of line in this instance and Euro Restaurant will never be frequented by us again.

A quiet evening out, a well deserved break after a hard days work moving house. What should be a top class restaurant with the most respect for its clients, building reputation as a place where not only the food is the best, but the whole experience leaves one feeling satisfied.

Reminds me of a merc showroom where a poorly dressed person may just be the excentric millionaire and so deserves as much respect as the next person.

Hmmm...

Smile A truely memorable dining experience

The 'Witch' and I took an overseas client here for dinner two weeks ago. My first visit, the 'Witch' dines out far more often than I do. We had booked at very short notice but were welcomed and shown promptly to our table. There we were presented with a menu guaranteed to make the most jaded palate salivate. Our choices: Entree's, two had the signature dish, Waikanae Crab, and both opinions were 'Outstanding.' Our guest said it was the best entree he had ever tasted and, despite him being an Aussie, he has a very experienced palate and is a lover of fine food. I had Calamari which was tender, and absolutely delicious. Mains: the 'Witch' had scallops, I forget how they were prepared but she said they were excellent. Guest had rotisserie chicken, yep, delicious. I had the blue cod, again, delicious. All excellent choices. Each meal was prepared and presented to perfection and the service throughout was professional and friendly. Wines: Terraces 04 Pinot Noir. Excellent. Desert wine: De Borteli Noble One. This is to die for! Next day the 'Witch' bought two bottles of same which amazingly are still in our ever-expanding wine collection. Generous meal portions meant we were unable to have deserts. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience and its top reputation (in our opinion) is well deserved. We will be back ASAP.
