Food was rather good - one of the better Indian cuisine in Auckland that I have tasted.

Service on the other hand, was a major let down. Shame they could not match their quality of food with an equal service quality.

So the evening had equal parts of disappointment and satisfaction.

Decided to stop by this place the last night for dinner. After horrible flakiness by a seemingly new waitress, I was delighted to shovel the superbly prepared food into my mouth. The atomosphere was at best, pleasant.

In my opinion, eat here given you have lots of time to wait for horrible unpredictable service and are looking for a just reward.

The food was good - the service was poor - the staff were uninterested, the food took ages to come.

If you can face the wait and don't mind poor service, the food is probably worth it - especially if you are craving a good curry. But otherwise - I'd go somewhere else ...

We celebrated my husband's birthday at Oh Calcutta.

There was 13 of us and when we called to make a booking they requested that we sent our order through 2 days in advance and the earliest time they could make a reservation for us on Friday night was 8:30.

The starters didn't arrive until 9pm, no poppadums were offered, no one bothered opening our wine, the food was very average and the service was terrible. We brought a cake in at 7:30 - one hour before our reservation and when we requested the cake after our meal they wanted to charge us $2 per head to slice the cake for us - they called it CAKEDGE.

Despite the fact that the service was so poor and that there was a delay for our food even though we ordered 48 hours prior to our visit, the unhelpful manager decided that $2 was fair as he would be loosing a dessert.

He did not get the $2 per head and now has 13 unhappy costumers that will never return to his restaurant.

The whole experience and atmosphere was very poor and I would not recommend that you go there to celebrate a special occasion as you will be disappointed.

Thank you, I actually tried to explain to him that 13 happy costumers were worth a lot more than $2 per head and quite a few of our guests hadn't been there before so if the experience had been good they would go back, he really didn't care. He doesn't seem to understand the meaning of customer service.

I visited Oh Calcutta as part of my restaurant reviews for a client. I took my wife and baby boy. We arrived at the venue exactly at the appointed time of 8.30pm. At the entrance, pregnant lady, apparently part of the management, motioned us to a petite lady behind the counter. Even at the time of the telephonic booking we were told that there were no sofa tables nor a baby chair, so we were not taken unawares. A lanky waiter took our order and I was particularly uncomfortable since he did not take down the order, and he promptly forgot our raita! The time between our drinks order and the food was inordinately long, and there were two large tables and three couples besides us, so it was understandable thatthe kitchen was busy, though nobody came to attend to us in the interim. One particularly distressing observation was about a waitress without a tidy hairdo, who kept scratching the back of her head with long nail-polished fingernails, and was frequently calling out to other staff across tables. So we winced when she brought our food, plonking them without either acknowledgement or eye contact. The food came in installments and by the time the restaurant specialty potato dish came, we were almost through with our meal. It took us over three and a half hours by the time we paid up, and besides admiring the ambience and looking out to the traffic on a rainy night, we found it painful to kill the time. However, in the end, a young trainee waiter made us feel 'wanted' by obliging to take photographs which we have with us as mementoes. The restaurant was highly recommended by friends, but I would only rate it as slightly above average. The food, though was good, and the kitchen did seem to be very clean through the show window. It was a weekday evening in early May this year. Cheers!
