Great Taste is one of the few buffet-style restaurants left in Dunedin, and thankfully it lives up to its name. The highlight of Great Taste is the Salad Bar, featuring soup, twenty different salads, several savoury dishes, fresh seasonal fruit and a dessert bar. At $9.95 for lunch, and $12.95 for dinner (with a slightly wider selection), the all-you-can-eat aspect of Great Taste is very affordable. There is also the choice of a main meal (from $9.95 to $19.95), which you can add the buffet to for an extra $4. For review sakes I sampled all the food available, and was thoroughly satisfied with the many eastern and western foods. The pumpkin soup, which came with cheese toast, was pleasantly spiced, while the 20 salads cater for all tastes. I particularly enjoyed the blanched courgette and carrot, which had a gorgeously spiced finish. The mains included incredibly tasty wedges, nachos with a three-bean sauce, spaghetti bolognaise, vegetarian sushi, and little spring rolls. The latter of these were by far the favourite, evidenced by their huge turnover. For an extra $3 you get the Drinks bar special, which includes all-you-can-drink coffee and soft drinks. The fully licensed bar has a wide selection of well-priced wines, and a beer list including most of the Monteiths range. The staff maintained a very friendly, attentive manner to the customers, and ran a very orderly restaurant, clearing plates from tables swiftly. Great Taste can easily cater for large and small groups and has a wonderful ambience, hard to find in a buffet-style restaurant. There is a definite fusion style in the surroundings, with elements of Asian architecture and Spanish colour themes. With the mix of intimate lighting and background contemporary music, Great Taste maintains a feeling of intimacy and warmth. If you’re looking for somewhere to gorge or to dine well, for a good price, the Great Taste Restaurant is an excellent choice for both value and satisfaction. |

Went to Great Taste for dinner not long after it opened. Had to place our order and pay before we were seated which is not really my idea of a restaurant. We had the buffet which sounded extensive but the food turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. I suppose for the price it wasn't too bad if your into that type of dining.
