George Street shoppers are spoilt for choice when it comes to Japanese dining, and with the new addition of Savoury Japan, the selection of restaurants is becoming frustrating to the discerning consumer. What does Savoury Japan have that warrants yet another venue for sushi and Asian meals in the CBD of Dunedin? The answer is simple. Low prices, with nothing over $10, and a very contemporary setting, something that can be seen to be lacking in the other Japanese restaurants. With prices starting from $1.50, for a bowl of delicately steamed rice, Savoury Japan has something for every budget. Most of the meals are around the $7-8 range, and are very generous in their servings. Through my various ventures to Savoury Japan I have tried most styles of their food. The Rainbow sushi was freshly made and delicate to the taste, with not a hint of mayonnaise that I have found in other restaurants. The Combination fried rice was delicious, not too dry, which can ruin a great dish of rice, and seasoned to perfection, while the Chicken and Cashew nut stirfry was pleasingly spiced and did not last long on my plate. The atmosphere is one of the most unique features of Savoury Japan. Featuring bright red walls, black and white dining booths and a traditional tatami mat section with low tables and cushions to sit on Savoury Japan has a perfect blend of contemporary Western styles and traditional Japanese décor. There is a definite modern jazz and dub soundtrack to this restaurant, which is played at the perfect level for conversation. The staff is friendly, and meals are presented swiftly. The drink list is minimal, and Savoury Japan is sadly not licensed, for those wishing some sake or pale ale with their meals. Despite this Savoury Japan presents a very affordable and pleasingly modern twist on the Japanese dining experience, which will hopefully influence a change in the other Japanese-style restaurants. |
