Default Horse meat

Now here is an interesting one:

Please correct me, but apparently on the TV3 news tonight, there was a bulletin about Horse meat being served at Canvas Restaurant. I have now received two emails about this.

The first email wondered whether the news bulletin was about the Museum Cafe which happens to also be on Grantham Street. The writer was a little confused - I am Time2Dine, not the restaurants that are listed on the forum:

Quote:
Hi we are receiving a fax from someone in Hamilton as it mentions the restaraunt in Grantham St Hamilton. There is no fax number or name attached to a poem we received tonight.. We have received one other fax from this would be poet, we are wondering who on earth it could be.
Are you the only restaurant in Grantham street?
We would like to inform whoever this person is they are sending it to us in Levin. We don't know anyone in Hamilton who would send this poetry.
Hoping you can enlighten us they mention eating horse meat...in the poem Janice
Then shortly after I received the following email:

Quote:
Horse meat!!?? You should be disgusted with yourselves! When will your menu's start listing 'dog' and 'cat'?.....why not list 'duck tongues' for the Asian community, I'm sure you can get them at a good price?! You are appalling...I hope you choke on "Mr. Ed"!

No regards,
Tanyia Hayes
I look forward to some lively comment.

My take on it

Some people are vegetarian, some religions don't like the idea of eating cows, others take offence at pork. Yet pork and beef are accepted meats for many. So why should eating horse meat be an issue. And if it is offensive, should it not be just taken in our stride like we ask people to do who are vegetarians.

Yes, calling it "Mr Ed is dead" is rather provocative. But isn't advertising meant to be provocative. It certainly gets peoples awareness up about it.

I didn't see it on the news but I work at one of the places listed here and the Monteiths Wild Food challenge is coming up so it might be a dish for that.

From what I've heard the meat comes from Auckland.

I am appalled that any restaurant in NZ would serve horsemeat.

Don't these people know that horses are only eaten by despicable people such as the French.

Bring no further shame on our high standards of dining and civilisation by ceasing this abhorent practise at once.

get over it buddy, and get your facts straight before you get up there on your high horse! not really eaten much in France anymore(more belgium), whats your beef with the French anyway? lovely race of people brought us many culinary delights, if it were not for them we'd be eating well done roast beef and boiled veg (but you probably love that). can't believe people are getting upset about this, you lot don't mind slaughtering cows sheep and pigs (not to mention little cute bobby calves for veal and baby chickens for poussin) but oh no not a horse cause they can talk and do good things for the community and find a cure for cancer, best not kill them for food, instead what we will do with them is train them to carry a wee fella and race them around in circles and beat them with a stick and make money off it, yeah thats much nicer.

Coming from a horse rider, I would like to try horse meat, however wasn't prepared to go back to Canvas to try it on the basis that their meals were average last time we were there, and the service was even worse.

The Horse Dish was fantastic. It was only available for 1month and I had it 5times. Interestingly when saint lazare got a side of horse in their was no upproar, apparently its ok to serve in a french themed resterant but not a Kiwi resteraunt. and replying to the last comment, the chef probably had a bad night and not every waitperson is amazing, try it again and youll probably be surprised.

Unfortunately Smitie, we have been back and I still didn't think much of it. There are too many restaurants in Hamilton that serve awesome food and have good or great service to bother going back to one with average food.
