Smile Italian Job Restaraunt

My partner and I are Italian food junkies - it's our Saturday night mission to try everything Italian from all around Auckland. I have heard very mixed reviews about the Italian Job. However it has been around for 20 odd years so I figure they must be doing something right. So here is how I found it:
The pasta; soft and fresh made - I made it a mission to talk to the chef and as it was not busy he accepted a short chat. He said he comes in at midday to prepare the pastas, then they open at 6pm. I tried the fettucine carbonara - a generic fave of mine and this dish did not dissappoint, creamy, soft, with the right amount of mushroom and onion, this was a rich starter and the entree pastas are quite large, so for my main I went simple. I would like to try more in the way of pastas at a later stage. For my main I had the mussles, they are done in a slightly spicy tomato based sauce. The main was extremelly large and plentiful which was a treat, I enjoyed them. Carla had tomato soup with garlic bread for a starter - the garlic bread was different, more like a garlic pizza, but very nice, could have done with more garlic on top. The tomato soup was divine, I could smell notes of rosemary and basil. For her main she ordered the pizza of the day. The bases she said are the best she has tried. I tried to talk the manager into telling me the secret of the base but to no avail. The service: friendly, a little slow. The decór: intersting, bright green walls... I dont know what they were thinking, but the framed pictures of scarface and the godfather made up for it. We were too full to try dessert but I will certainly be back again.
