We have visited this cafe three weeks ago. My boyfriend forgot his windbreaker jacket (not a cheap one). When we recognized it we turned and drove all the way back, but the cafe was already closed. As Haast is a very small town and fare away from any interesting spots we decided to drive on and give them a call the next day. We were told that they would not send the jacket as they could not debit our credit card. We went to the post office and send them a letter including a pre-stamped courier package addressed to a backpacker in Auckland and called them again. They promised to send the jacket. But they did not! I have never experienced something like that before! Everybody who travels knows that it is possible to forget something. And it would have been easy and not very time-consuming to put the jacket into the envelope and hand it over to the postman (who comes every other day). But they did not! I am speachless. As the holder of this cafe is such a shame for the tourism in Haast, I would not recomment the cafe. |

We were told they would not send the jacket, because they could not charge our credit card. We went to the post office and send a letter containing a package of prepaid mail addressed to a hiker in Auckland and called again. They promised to send the envelope. But they did not. I've never experienced anything like this before! Everyone knows that the transfer is possible to forget something.

I am from Sydney and traveling through the Otago region. I heard that Hasst is famous for Whitebait so travelled there to try some. We stopped at the Fantail Cafe which advertised itself on the board at the front as having Whitebait on the menu. On entering the cafe had a very strong smell of cooking but not deterred we order the famous Whitebait fritter and Blue eyed cod and chips. The cod and chips were good albeit pre packaged chips used however the Whitebait fritter was AWFUL it was cooked in egg as an omelette but the few pieces of Whitebait were completely tasteless. Anyone who has eaten Whitebait in other places around the world as I have knows that fresh Whitebait has a very strong and distinctive flavour and is crunchy and delicious. This rubbery flat piece of overcooked egg was AWFUL.
