Mangiamo has good quality food and the service is reasonably efficient. It is more expensive, though, than the nearby Bay Cafe and it's difficult to understand why, as the food is equally good at the Bay Cafe. The main problem at Mangiamo is the chronic lack of space; there simply is not enough seating for the number of customers. They have tried to make up for this by providing as much outdoor seating as possible, but there still isn't enough. Last week I ordered lunch at Mangiamo and then found that I had nowhere at all to sit; I don't think they should have taken my order if there was no space available. To make matters worse, others in the queue had reserved tables in advance by placing bags, magazines, and other belongings on unoccupied tables; this procedure is regarded by Mangiamo management as perfectly legitimate. The staff managed to find some seating for me after I said that I wanted to cancel my order and receive a refund. They said that it was exceptionally crowded that day but I have noticed it to be equally crowded when passing by on other days. Another point is that the background music at Mangiamo is too loud and intrusive; this didn't bother me too much, as I was on my own, but if I had been trying to have a conversation it would have been a problem. Clearly Mangiamo is a popular venue and offers good quality meals, but has definite problems with lack of space and excessive noise.

I visited Mangiamo restaurant with my family in December when the restaurant was extremely busy, and it is not difficult to see why. Having sold, the new owners have refurbished the premises, extending the amount of seating space and upgrading the inside of the restaurant with a real flair. The food is all cooked on site and the smell of fresh baking is very welcoming.. The staff offerred me a tasting plate of the 13 home baked slices to assit me with my choice. The music was jazzy/middle of the road, and suitable to sit and read the paper and enjoy the outdoor ambience, I loved the new palm trees, and the feeling of a friendly open environment. They are clearly dog lovers - during the hour I was many dog owners and their pets were welcomed with biscuits (the dogs, not the owners) and everyone seemed to be relaxed. The children were catered for with colouring books and pens. The Allpress coffee is the BEST. I was impressed that they also had an out catering service. It was difficult to get a seat.... but it was clear they were the busiest in the bay... but were worth waiting for.

Encouraged by the review of 9th Jan, I decided to try Mangiamo again yesterday to judge the improvements. The claims of refurbishment are greatly exaggerated; the only difference I noticed since my last visit is that there seems to be a new floor surface. There certainly isn't any more seating than there was last time. However, I had no difficulty in getting a seat, as it was definitely less crowded than before: it was a fine summer's day and I suspect that the beach was a rival attraction. The lasagne that I had was good quality, but the price was a bit steep at $8.50. At the Delirante in Browns Bay the lasagne is just as good and costs only $5.00. So while Mangiamo is undoubtedly a fine cafe, I would not rate it as giving outstanding value.
