Default Molten

The Good
The staff were top-notch from the initial greeting, to the cheery farewells. In between, they were invisibly efficient. Knowledgeable about the menu, too; I gave our waiter a rigorous grilling, and he only quailed slightly when I started asking impertinent questions about the cotechino sausage.

The food was wonderful. The gorgeous simplicity of the gorgonzola mash brought me to tears. For a main course I chose the gamefish special – a broadbill steak. When asked how I wished the steak done, I gaily said “let the chef decide!” Dear Mr Broadbill did not die in vain. The steak was seared to tender perfection.

Meal sizes were generous. Two side dishes were more than enough between the four of us, and despite possessing a rapacious appetite (in all things), I was sated, and really could have done without the dessert. However, possessing a lack of moderation (in all things), I enjoyed a reasonable jaggery crumble.

The Not-So-Good
Having already viewed their website, and chosen dishes of interest, I was irritated to find that the actual menu was quite different, and none of my choices were on offer.

One of the Vile File party had to wait over five minutes for her meal while the rest of us waited with our rapidly cooling food. However, the staff was extremely apologetic, and deducted the cost of one of the sides from the bill to compensate.

Total: $232 for four (including wine)

Rating: A

My jaw is still hanging after visiting Molten. The service was impeccable, the dessert drool worthy, and the decor aesthetically pleasing. They close at 11 on a Thursday, however were only to happy make an exception and accomodate us at 11.15. If only all restaurants had the service provided by our rather striking waiter!

The desserts themselves were masterpieces. I had the Fejoa sorbet and pineapple brittle drizzled with fejoa vodka, and after polishing that off I seriously contemplated ordering another. My other half had the Ginger Beer panacotta with plum. Beautifully presented and it was sacrilege to eat it!

Despite initially bringing out the wrong dessert, and a 5 minute wait, they compensated by removing the cost of my dessert from the bill.

Overall, well worth a visit. I know I will be making a return visit!

Default A complaint well handled becomes a compliment

Thanks for your review. I always like hearing success stories about restaurants.

In your case an honest botchup by the restaurant in serving the wrong dessert was saved by a reduced charge on the bill. And so you left the restaurant with a real sweet taste in your mouth rather than sour grapes of a bad experience that it could have been.

Well done Molten.

Cool Mt Eden's best kept secret??

I got introduced to Molten by a friend (who had in turn only recently been introduced) for my birthday. I absolutely loved it, and have to agree that the service was impeccable - yet it felt very relaxed and casual.
We both thought our steaks could've been a little more cooked in the centre, but I wouldn't complain about it as it was still beautiful.
I'm surprised I couldn't finish the dessert as that was absolutely gorgeous as well!
I think they have a lovely courtyard style (undercover though) room at the back, I could just see the start of it from my seat, so quite keen to go back and check it out...

Default Molten restaurant is right up there with the best.

In our view Molten is just short of being rated as outstanding. The biggest problem we now face is that it has become so popular we have to plan 3 weeks ahead to ensure a reservation but be assured it is well worth the extra planning. Every evening dining experience we have had has been great, the service well paced with polished with knowledgable front of house staff. The food has always been a delight. When we had a show to get to we told them up front and as a result had no problems. Our one lunch experience was less formal and on that occasion really suited the mood. We would have to say that this restaurant is really nipping at the heels of Aucklands best. Thanks, Joandmark.
