As Chambers Restaurant advertises itself with the following quotes: “The town’s best restaurant”, “One of the region’s best restaurants”, and The City’s Finest Dining”, we were expecting something above the ordinary.

We arrived at the advertised opening time of 6.00pm only to be told it did not open till 6.30, and it was suggested we could fill in the time having a drink at the bar!

The décor of the restaurant is late Victorian/Edwardian, and we did appreciate the white linen table cloths and dinner-napkins.

We started our meal with entrees. The Chicken Livers I ordered, turned out to be a rather “mushy” dish and missing the advertised caramelised onion ($14.50). My wife had the Manuka Smoked Salmon on a warm Gourmet Potato Salad (one small potato cut into four), etc. ($15.50). Neither were award winning dishes!

We were not impressed so we skipped the Mains, and ordered a cheeseboard for two – a selection of two cheeses, water crackers, a bunch of grapes and “Gernot’s Famous Apple & Rosemary Jelly” ($19.50)

The cognac I ordered with my black coffee, came in an unwarmed glass!Altogether it was a rather disappointing evening (perhaps because we started off, and finished, on a sour note) but the following night we were able to find a better and less expensive restaurant. (A glass of wine $9.50 at Chambers; a glass of the same wine at another restaurant $8.50)
