They have issued a warning that similar schemes will attract a tough police reaction. The Liquor Licensing Authority ruled last week that two north Dunedin bars – the Bowling Green Tavern and the Captain Cook Tavern – had breached the Sale of Liquor Act by offering extremely cheap drinks for brief periods. Promotions that encourage excessive drinking are illegal under the act, but the authority gave the two bars six months to improve. Police superintendent Dave Trappitt said the Bowling Green was "lucky it hasn't been made an example of", and promised that police would push for "appropriate sanctions" if other bars were caught. The moral of the story, be very careful what you advertise. Giving one free drink with a meal should be fine, it is the promotion whereby there is encouragement of binge drinking - that is the issue.
