Thumbs down Not Euthentic..

I went to Hansan Restaurant for the first time and never went back.
My boyfriend and I ordered "Pho* Dac. Biet" (special beef noodles). We were looking forward to a nice meal, as we drove from Otahuhu (where theres many Viet restaurants there) to Panmure just to try it out.

When our pho dac biet arrived, Oh how disappointed we were. The noodle soup looks plain (it looks like they just got the soup out of the tap!), overfilled noodles and 3-4 little pieces of beef floating at the top of the bowl. There were no salad, or lemon, or spinkles of spring onions to garnish the soup. My bf and I just both stared at each other then at the bowls of noodles...We sat there for the next five minutes hoping that the waiter would come back and bring us the rest of our meals... And by the way "pho dac biet" is not just with beef!! (thats beef noodle). Pho Dac biet is a combination of other meat and seafood!!!

And worste of all, when I ask the waiter for a jack fruit drink, he had no idea what the hell i was talking about so he started talking to me in Chinese!!!

Thumbs up Panmure Delights

A couple of weeks myself and two of my friends were faced with a huge decision: what to eat for our Friday night girls dvd night?! So there we were, fluffing around Panmure, completely overwhelmed what seemed to be an endless array of asian takeaway bars and roast shops. Extremely conscious of the particular tastes of my two girlfriends (okay, mine too, we're all a bit high-maintenance!) we made the agonising decision to go with Hansan, the local Vietnamese. So off we schlepped, having gazed at the menu at home for the better part of half an hour and having changed our orders at least twice each. Upon arrival I was reassured by the fact that there were quite a few people there.... a lot of people even, either queueing up for tables or for takeaways. A good sign! And here I was thinking I'd invented it. The restaurant itself, size-wise, was not unlike a sports stadium, huge, echoey and starkly lit with fluorescent bulbs. No fear of not knowing what you're eating here, the lighting practically provides x-ray vision. So not really where I'd come for date night, but a cheerful enough place, with a plethora of rowdy families fighting over the exotic-looking fare and distributing drinks from their chilli bins (it's byo here). Having made our order over the phone we were thinking to be out fairly quickly, little did we know that our friend on 'order duty' had unwittingly relayed our final decisions to the lovely girl on the other end of the phone... in Hansan Glenfield. Oh well. Never fear though, as they must have superchef out the back there and no sooner had we started to attempt a study of the Vietnamese daily news our order was ready to roll. Cut to the chase.... my chicken soup with lemongrass was absolutely delicious; hot, garlicky and fragrant with just the right amount of lemongrass. A hint of coriander was detectable and tasty morsels of pan-fried chicken bobbed around it with a world of perfectly cooked rice noodles - not a hint of gluey swamp in sight. Since my memory is not what it used to be, I can't recall what my friends ordered although I do remember a lot of enthusiastic nodding and murmuring. We also shared a grilled prawn salad which had a sweet-chili dressing of the refreshing tangy variety, not so syrupy as they tend to be. Needless to say I was impressed, like others before me it seems! Great value too, from memory (alright, you had better double-check this) it cost us around $13 a head. Bargain in these tight times!

Hansan is value for money, it's clean staff are polite n your guaranteed to find a seat!
Hansan is where blue collar Auckland comes to dine, Scan the room n you see tired hungry shiftworkers, uni students, gym bunnies, young parents n pensioners slurping noodles n soups sipping green tea for less than $12.00/head
The owners are a credit to their folks, from refugees to succesfull business owners
