There are now a number of Little India restaurants around New Zealand, and now in Melbourne Australia. What do you think of the Little India Restaurants???

Little India empire to spread out

Australians will soon get a taste of New Zealand's Little India, with the restaurant group preparing to open in Melbourne.

Little India began in Dunedin in 1991. Its empire has since spread to Christchurch, which has three restaurants, Wellington, which also has three, and Nelson, Queenstown, Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland, which each have one.

The company turned over more than $5 million last year and employs about 80 staff.

Founder Sukhi Gill, a Christchurch accountant, said Melbourne was chosen because visitors from there had enjoyed eating at Little India restaurants and wanted to know if the chain had a presence across the Tasman.

"Some of the people came to Christchurch on a regular basis and would book from Melbourne," Mr Gill said.

"It's a compliment that people want to come back. They would say: `Why don't you open in Melbourne?' "

Mr Gill said he knew Melbourne was one of the restaurant capitals of the world, but there were no other Indian bistros near their inner-city site in South Yarra.

Work had begun on the 64 to 70-seat restaurant, which he hoped would open at the end of next month, offering the same menu as in New Zealand.....

Do they serve authentic indian food as I am from india and visiting aukland so I just wanted to have them on my list.

First thing a guy once visit foreign land look for familiar stuff because they like it to be in the environment where they have been from childhood, but because of my bad experiences I prefer go to continental restaurant. You know it human nature to compare and I can not stop it.

Little India I miss you!!

I had never heard of the Little India restaurant until I was in Wellington and ran into it. My wife and I ate there two days straight, very good food. I had the full order of Tandoori Chicken, and it was just perfect. I would definitely recommend it, the only thing that was suprising to us was that lunch was only from 11:30 to 2, and then they reopen for dinner at 5. It was really busy, and they could have had more business if open more hours. We will be going back to Wellington in the fall, and hope to stop by there again.
