you have to go to this place it's the best cafe in Rotorua they have the most fantastic cakes and not a rip off like some places

We were disappointed with the service and attitude we received.

Being Vegetarian, we thought that we had done our prep. Asked what Oil they used before sitting down - Soyabean. Had limited choices and fortunately rechecked to find that the wedges had been fried in animal fat, which meant they had to go back right at the start.

Still had to pay for them, even though we had made it clear that we were vegetarian.

When we saw that they had still charged us, we thought a mistake had been made, but were told in no uncertain terms it is what we ordered and seeing that we had touched them, they had to be paid for.

Paid $85 for lunch - would think service would be better and they would be up to admitting that they had made the mistake.

Lesson: Check your bill before paying.

I don’t know what this person is talking about I go to Ciccio all the time, I’m a Vegetarian I always let the Waitress know this fact, and they always tell me if I may not want something as it’s got animal fat or products in it, I also have allergies and I’m treated with respect as this can be a bit embarrassing nothing is a problem they listen to what I’m telling them and take all precautions. I don’t think the previous person told them they were Vegetarian as I just don’t believe it from this cafe, they are quite well known in the Bay of Plenty for being able to deal with food allergies and the Chef Jo sometimes even makes up a dish for me on the spot that’s not on the menu if i fancy something a little different, she is fussy and makes all of her own dressings, using soya oil and only uses Masterfoods Dijon so the Celiacs in the world can eat them (the only brand they can have). My brother is a Celiac and greatly appreciates this gesture. So all you Vegetarians out there don’t be afraid to go to this place, they are one of the few places that have a lot of options for you look for the red V on the menu, can’t find anything that suits you talk to the waitress she’ll ask the chef to create something especially for your dietary requirements or needs. my wife and I went here and loved the place, great service without hovering constantly over you, even though the placed was packed, I had the Steak with Prawns, finally I have found someone who can cook steak just the was I like it, my wife had the Seafood Chowder and said it is the best known to man, finished off the night with a Tiramisu yet again they excelled themselves it was magic, also nice that an Italian place doesn't play Opera which I hate, the music was Italian but it was modern would love to know what the CD was but forgot to ask.

Thanks for the additional information. No, we are very careful about letting people know that we are vegetarian - Jo, the owner was not there unfortunately, so things might have been very different if she had been. I spoke to her afterward, once we had returned from our holiday because I felt strongly enough to 'let her know'. She basically took the side of her staff, which is her perogative, but unfortunately the facts were the facts. I suppose that this is just one that we are going to have to have different opinions about. Sorry.
