vBSEO has an inbuilt facility to add these automatically. You can put those links anywhere on your pages. This works best for sites that are in the development phrase - developing new forums continually.

However, at the moment, my footer links are manual - I take the html from the sitemap page and manipulate it in excel, then add to the footer template.

Default Lots of work, but well worth it

Why do you have a website? To have it found!!! So it is well worth working hard at the SEO.

Have a read of the following article that I have just been made aware of.
The Art of Online Conversion

is it best to have the meta description different to the first words that are now in the navbar?

how vital is it and how much of a difference should there be, if any at all?

Default First words have to be different from meta desc

I have seen msn and yahoo take a longer snippet of pages that have the meta description the same as the first words. Looks rather bad.

Best policy is to have the opening paragraph (being the first words after the h1), as being different to the meta description.

I have some basic onpage SEO rules that I consider are enough to get you ranked without trying to "outthink" the SE's. Having a unique meta to opening paragraph is one of those rules.

Looking at your mods... I use:margin: 0 auto;

It's the standard in XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
Also, I like what you did at time2dine, by linking the the forum names, when you display an error page.
I did the same thing, using instead a site map, vBSEO style.

Red face

Dear michael

I want to use this code from here that for vbulletin 3.5.x and 3.6.x so my forum description will like forums.seochat.com description like my post before, but it not works for vbulletin 3.6.5 :

Quote:
headinclude template changes

  • For the threadinfo description, I prefer to add a few more words.
  • The members meta description can only add specific members information via the members template, so we exclude it from here.
  • I like to have a specific meta description for the poll
existing:

Code:
<if condition="$show['threadinfo']"><meta name="description" content="<if condition="$pagenumber>1"><phrase 1="$pagenumber">$vbphrase[page_x]</phrase>-</if>$threadinfo[title] $foruminfo[title_clean]" />

replace with your version of the following:

Code:
<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT<>member"><if condition="THIS_SCRIPT=='poll'"> <meta name="keywords" content="$vbphrase[view_poll_results] $threadinfo[title] $vboptions[keywords] " /> <meta name="description" content="$vbphrase[view_poll_results] of $threadinfo[title] $foruminfo[title_clean]. " /> <else /><if condition="$show['threadinfo']"><meta name="description" content="$threadinfo[title] - <if condition="$pagenumber>1"><phrase 1="$pagenumber">$vbphrase[page_x]</phrase>-</if> $foruminfo[title_clean]. Domain.com is the place to discuss $threadinfo[title]" />

Add an </if></if> to the existing </if>'s

You can check from meta tag analysis for thread description here too

let me know if you have update code

Default Not sure what your problem is.

If it doesnt work, then find out why by understanding what is happening.

I copy and paste directly from there, and it has been working. But if it is not working for you, please just understand what is happening with the code, and fix yourself.

There is one conditional deleted, and three added, net two added. Therefore two extra </if>'s added. Should work fine.

I've installed this hack but have a couple of queries about a couple of things:

1. If you look at the very top of my forum at http://www.thetrancearena.com/forums/, it says . TheTranceArena.com is the place to discuss " /> - Am i right in thinking that that shouldn't be showing there? If so, do you know what i've done wrong?

What lines do I add the rel=nofollows too? I've gone into UserCP> Styles & Templates> Style Manager> Edit Templates> and looked under "register" and "contactus" - but there are lines of code, and i'm worried about changinf the wrong line. Could you let me know what lines I have to change please?

With the description plugin, the problem is that people don't know seo, and so don't write seo'ed descriptions. So there needs to be a formula that does it for them, and includes their custom description:

I have used the following
[PHP]<meta name="description" content="'$threadinfo[title]' on $foruminfo[title_clean] forum of domainname. com - <if condition="$pagenumber>1"><phrase 1="$pagenumber">$vbphrase[page_x]</phrase>-</if><if condition="$threadinfo[description]">$threadinfo[description]<else />$threadinfo[title]</if>- <!--VBSEO_RR_1-->"/>
[/PHP]

It doesn't explain where that line has to be added, so i've not been able to add that. Could you explain where that line has to be added please?

Forum Meta Description

Add the forum title onto the start of the forum meta description

Add the red text:
<meta name="description" content="$foruminfo[title_clean]-

- means that you can have repetition of the title key phrase twice in the meta description if you only otherwise have it once in there.
I'm also a bit confused about where I add that line. Where do I find the forum meta description that you mention?

I'm sorry if I sound a bit of a dumb-ass. I just want to make 100% sure that i'm putting the code into the correct places incase it causes problems on my forums. If you could help me out with those four queries, i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks very much for sharing this hack with us. Your hard work and efforts are really appreciated. I get paid next week, so i'll be sending a donation over to thank you for your hard work. Thanks a lot T2DMan
