Thumbs up Licorice Cafe = yum

Licorice cafe is described as "a best kept secret" this might not be so apt, this well presented cafe was fairly busy when i stopped in, but we still found quick service and a warm spot by the fire where I enjoyed some good coffee, and a decent BLT.

Licorice is on SH1, and not difficult to find, again hardly a secret spot, so let's say their secret is out! It's a good cafe to stop in at if you're trucking through the Taupo region.

Angry Our dissappointment at Licorice en route from Turangi to Taupo

The sign 'Award Winning Cafe' drew us in and we decided on the ' eggs and bacon' brunch...and asked for 'scrambled'. What arrived was a puffy yellow bag of air with limp bacon and toast. We were also charged an additional $1 each because we had 'scrambled' (which we only found this out after we queried the bill after the meal was commenced). This was not shown on the price board. Other food in the cabinet did look nice so we were dissappointed we had chosen the eggs and bacon.

Upon quering the bill, I received an abrubt unfriendly response. I subsequently then received a very abrupt unfriendly response when asked for a refund on the overcharge. When I asked if the eggs were real (rather than the powdered variety)I was promptly reminded that it was 'an award winning cafe'. It seems this allows people to serve rubbish, charge what they like and be rude to boot.so we wont bother trying it again - there,s a better one in Turangi anyway. A dissappointing event in what was otherwise a wonderful long awaited weekend escape.

Angry

I was horrified to eat at Licorice Cafe yesterday en route from Rotorua to Wellington. Being a regular cafe user I thought it would be ok to recharge my kids DVD player while dining, after all anywhere else in the world it's ok to charge phones, laptops, etc as you drink/dine. The owner promptly removed the plug from the wall and mumbled that I had no right to plug anything in. What followed was a series of ridiculous excuses ranging from the cost of power to cutting power to the whole district if I was to plug anything in. If I hadn't already paid for the meal we would have walked out there and then. To rub salt into the wound the food was bland, overpriced and the service (as you could imagine) truly terrible. There are plenty of other places on tis popular tourist route - I strongly urge you to bypass the Licorice Cafe!
