Default Overall winner Lace Fine Wine Merchants award

08 September 2005

Care of TizWine and Scoop

Wellington’s Arbitrageur Restaurant on Featherston Street has won its second major award in a month after being judged the overall national winner of the Lace Fine Wine Merchants award for its wine list this week.

The awards attracted over 200 entries from all over New Zealand, with Wellington establishments providing four of the six category winners.

A fortnight ago Arbitrageur was accorded worldwide recognition from the US-based Wine Spectator magazine, which gives recognition to restaurants with wine lists that display vintage depth, vertical offerings of several top wines, excellent breadth from major wine growing regions and typically 400 or more selections.

Arbitrageur director Chris Green said the restaurant had grown its wine cellar to around 5000 bottles represented by more than 670 different labels from Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, US, South America and the wine regions of New Zealand.

Arbitrageur’s point of difference is a menu with country of origin meals that can be matched to the international wine list. A novel colour coding describes the wines that live behind foreign language labels.

“This takes the mystery out of wine tasting and food matching and makes people less hesitant to try different wine and food combinations,” Mr Green said.

Have dined there twice. The first time for lunch is was good food and service.

The second time they overcharged by more than $100, by adding extra mains to the bill. They said it was a mistake but did not apologise for overcharging.

My advice check your bill before paying. They dont seem to care about their customers.

I dined there last night for a birthday, it was very lovely, we had a very attentitive waitress who ensured our glasses of water never reached the bottom of the glass. The food was lovely - however not very substantial. Most of us filled up on the water and bread rather than the main meal itself.

We had this absolutely delicious entree that we managed to share between three people ($24) and like our water, the bread was refilled once we had finished the first loaf.

A little expensive but otherwise a delightful dining experience.
