Thumbs down Cafe Bastille - Review

What is all the fuss about? We visited this café with high expectations but came away less than impressed. It was hardly “rush hour” when we dined (5:30pm) but still the service managed to be less than speedy. Entrees arrived – eel was good, the famed “rustic salad” was awfully greasy with a real mish mash of flavours and the pate was more like a store bought block than a the homemade variety. On to the mains. With all the recommendations – everyone had the steak and frites. He steak was cooked to perfection but the quality of meat was rather lacking – chew chew chew gulp! As for the frites – if you expect the lovely handcut variety expect to be disappointed – McCains or Watties it is. The side dish of beans were lovely – best part of the meal but the rattatouie was severely over salted (as was the steak for that matter). If you want an overpriced average meal out – head to Café Bastille. If not – Wellington is awash with better restaurants than this. Oh yes – be warned – this purports to be a child friendly café but BYO highchair.

Default Cafe Bastille's bad day - but it suites the tastes of some

Thanks for your review Philip. Never so nice when you have a bad experience. Maybe it was just their off day, as you mentioned many people have had great experiences at Cafe Bastille.

"The food is exquisite, Oh La La!"
New Zealand Herald
"This café strikes a right cord with me, it's a nicely put together package. It feels good, its service is sharp, its food simple but stunning."

Smile Great food, great service

Our first meal at Cafe Bastille was more than expected. Dining at 7pm the place was bustling with customers coming in continually but the service was intimate, professional and friendly with perfect timing. From the moment we were greeted at the door by the maitre d' till the time we left, also shown out in the same friendly manner we thoroughly enjoyed this eating experience. Loved the casual atmosphere, the warm enthusiasm from all staff and the outstandingly good food. How nice to not have to hound the waiters for fresh water or wait forever for more wine.
We chose the coq au vin - so tasty, delicous and filling and the pan rosted lake pukaki salmon (never tasted anything like it before - such wonderful subtle flavours) and green beans with hollandaise (cooked to perfection). I really don't like salmon but could easily have cleaned up my partners dish if he'd let me have more than one small forkfull! The french country bread tasted like just that. The desserts were heavenly. The wine extremely good. Great value - we shall be back.
