Default The BayLeaf Cafe, Evans Bay

The sun was shining, the birds chirping time for a bike ride! On our way back we popped into this little cafe nestled in the concrete townhouse jungle by the bay. A small cafe serving breakfast and lunch to residents and travellers alike. I asked for the Fish Cakes with my companion opting for the Burger both $14 each. We decided to eat on the footpath outside which accomodatoes a couple of tables. We sat and sat and sat. You know that time-frame and you're starting to think have they lost my order? We were ravenous after our ride and the cafe wasn't exactly heaving (and had 4 staff to cover). Just in time the doors open and the top of the burger falls to the ground, ahhh we nearly got it! To the waitress's credit she took it back and presented it a couple of minutes later, complete with new top? The burger looked great, a double banger, as we would say back home. Two huge home-made meat patties, with sliced tomato, red onion (raw) and dijonnaise style sauce. The perfect pick me up on a Saturday morning when over indulgence the night prior may have occured Served with pretty ordinary chips (frozen?) and "Tommy K" in a little bowl. Very tasty burger! My fish cakes arrived by this stage also. Presented on a huge white square plate, they were actually deep fried fish balls. A golden coating revealed a light fluffy potato and fish mixture, no obvious herb seasoning etc just a nice simple fish mixture. This I thought was nice given the cafe trend of fish cakes always being in the Thai style. A real delight, even my companion was impressed and he tends to stick to meat from the land! Served with a great roasted vegetable mix (served warm) and a fresh salad dressed with a dijonnaise style salad cream. This was a nice little light meal, perfect on a hot day. Slightly confused with the little bowl of sweet chili sauce/mayonnaise. The sweet chili seemed out of place as the only Asian ingredient. Since the cakes were quite traditional maybe a Tartar or the good ole' Thousand Island would suit better. Nothing against sweet chili sauce, but it's not a sauce for every occasion, establishments shouldn't use it as a posh version of tomato sauce.
A nice little cafe, probably avoid busy times but will be back for the hang-over sized burger!
